Howo Mining Truck Brake Warning Light Fault Causes & Troubleshooting

2026-09-25 23:42

Howo mining trucks operate under heavy-load, bumpy, and dusty mine conditions. An illuminated brake warning light is usually caused by excessive wear, hydraulic circuit abnormalities, sensor/wiring faults, incomplete release of parking brake, or ABS system failure. Different from ordinary highway trucks, below is a breakdown of common issues sorted by failure probability, with on-site troubleshooting and repair solutions.

I. High-frequency Common Faults (over 80% of cases)

1. Brake pad/shoe worn to the limit (most frequent)

Frequent braking under heavy mine loads accelerates wear of brake pads and shoes. Howo mining trucks are fitted with wear alarm sensors built into brake pads. When the pad thickness wears down to the limit of 3mm, the sensor is triggered and turns on the brake warning light. Some models show text prompts on the dashboard.

Associated symptoms: Braking performance remains normal without spongy feel or pull; only the warning light stays on. Slight metal grinding noise may occur during heavy-load braking.

Solution: Inspect brake pad wear on all wheels. Replace worn pads with original parts once they reach the wear limit. Check whether the wear alarm sensor is burnt or loose. Replace damaged sensors together. Do NOT short-circuit wiring simply to turn off the light for continued operation.

2. Low brake fluid level / deteriorated brake fluid

Severe vibration on mine roads loosens pipe joints and causes leakage of brake fluid. Long-term operation also leads to fluid water absorption and degradation. If the fluid level drops below the MIN mark on the reservoir, the level sensor triggers the warning light.

Associated symptoms: Spongy brake pedal, increased pedal travel, insufficient braking force during emergency stops; obviously low fluid level in the reservoir.

Solution: First check all brake lines, wheel cylinders and master cylinder for leaks, then repair leak points and tighten connections. Top up with OEM brake fluid to between MAX and MIN. Replace fluid completely and bleed air from the circuit if the fluid is cloudy or contaminated with water.

3. Parking brake (spring brake) not fully released

Howo mining trucks use air-operated spring brakes. Mine dust can clog parking brake valves or jam return springs, preventing full release of the parking brake. The system detects abnormal braking and activates the warning light during idling or driving.

Associated symptoms: Difficult vehicle takeoff, slight brake drag, parking brake lever cannot fully return; air pressure in air tanks is normal but parking brake does not fully disengage.

Solution: Pull and release the parking brake repeatedly to test return movement. Clean dust from the parking brake valve and lubricate return components. Replace the valve or jammed springs to fully release the parking brake.

II. Medium-probability Faults (common in harsh mine conditions)

1. Brake sensor / wiring fault (high rate of false alarms)

Mine dust, mud and violent vibration often loosen sensor connectors, cause wire insulation damage or connector oxidation and water ingress. This triggers an alarm without actual braking defects, resulting in false faults.

Associated symptoms: Full normal braking performance; warning light turns on and off intermittently, more often when driving over rough ground.

Solution: Inspect four-wheel brake sensor connectors and brake fluid level sensor wiring one by one. Clean oxidation, tighten loose plugs and rewrap damaged wires. Replace faulty sensors and clear fault codes with a diagnostic scanner.

2. Insufficient brake air pressure / air circuit fault

Howo mining trucks rely on compressed air for brake assist. Poor air compressor output, clogged air dryer, accumulated water in air tanks or air circuit leaks can lead to substandard working brake pressure and trigger the brake alarm.

Associated symptoms: Low air pressure reading on dashboard, slow brake response, sharp pressure drop after repeated brake application, slow air build-up at idle speed.

Solution: Locate and repair air leaks, drain water and oil from air tanks, replace clogged air dryers and pressure regulators. Repair or replace faulty air compressors to maintain rated operating brake pressure.

III. Severe Faults (stop operation immediately for inspection)

1. Brake hydraulic / air circuit leakage, seized wheel cylinders

Long-term heavy load and vibration age wheel cylinder seals and crack pipelines, causing loss of brake pressure. This not only lights the warning lamp but also seriously endangers braking safety.

Associated symptoms: Spongy brakes, severely reduced braking force, vehicle pulling during braking, oil stains on the ground for hydraulic leaks, audible hissing for air leaks.

Solution: Stop operation immediately. Replace cracked pipelines and aged seals, overhaul seized wheel cylinders. Refill fluid, bleed air and test braking performance before resuming work.

2. ABS wheel speed sensor / ABS system fault

Mud and dust cover wheel speed sensors on mining trucks, causing missing or abnormal signals, ABS errors and simultaneous activation of the brake warning light on some models.

Associated symptoms: Normal regular braking; no anti-lock function during emergency braking; ABS fault codes displayed on dashboard.

Solution: Clean mud from four wheel speed sensors and tone rings. Inspect wiring integrity. Replace damaged sensors or worn tone rings, then reset the system with a diagnostic scanner.

IV. Priority On-site Troubleshooting Steps (for mine site)

  1. Check if parking brake fully releases and dashboard air pressure is normal (30-second quick check)

  2. Check brake fluid level and pipeline leakage

  3. Inspect brake pad wear on all wheels

  4. Inspect brake sensor connectors and wiring

  5. Read fault codes via diagnostic scanner to pinpoint ABS or electrical faults

V. Critical Safety Reminders

  1. If the warning light is on together with spongy brakes, reduced braking force, vehicle pull or insufficient air pressure, do not operate under heavy load or travel at speed. Shut down and inspect immediately.

  2. Never manually short-circuit sensor wiring or mask warning lights. Under heavy mine loads, this may cause total brake failure and serious accidents.

  3. Regularly clean brake dust and drain accumulated water from air tanks to reduce false and recurring alarms.
