Howo Mining Truck Hydraulic Cylinder Seal Replacement Guide

2026-10-02 23:38

Howo mining trucks operate under heavy-load, dusty and high-stress working conditions. The seals of hydraulic cylinders are prone to wear, hardening and cracking, which causes oil leakage, weak lifting and pressure drop / hopper sinking. Seal replacement must follow the principles of pressure relief, thorough cleaning, non-destructive disassembly and standard assembly to adapt to the heavy-duty cylinder structure of mining trucks and prevent rework and cylinder damage. The complete practical procedure is as follows.

1. Preparations before replacement (Safety & Materials)

1.1 Safety preparation

Park the mining truck on firm and level ground. Turn off the engine, cut off power, engage the handbrake and chock the wheels. Operate the hydraulic control lever repeatedly to fully release residual pressure in the hydraulic system. Never disassemble under pressure, otherwise high-pressure oil may spray out and cause injury. If the hopper is raised, securely support it with safety stands or solid wooden blocks. Do not rely solely on the hydraulic system to bear the load, to prevent the hopper from falling.

1.2 Tools & spare parts

  • Genuine complete seal kit matching the Howo mining truck cylinder (including piston main oil seal, rod seal, wiper seal, O-rings, wear rings and back-up rings. Do not use non-standard parts).

  • Clean ISO VG46 anti-wear hydraulic oil, special hydraulic grease.

  • Tools: Allen wrenches, socket set, rubber mallet, plastic pry bar, seal installation cone, fine sandpaper, lint-free rags, pipe plugs and oil drain pan.Do not use sharp steel tools to avoid scratching the cylinder barrel inner wall, piston rod and seal grooves.

1.3 Site cleaning

Mining sites contain large amounts of dust. Remove dirt and gravel around the cylinder in advance and set up a simple dust-proof work area. Keep dust and impurities out of the cylinder during disassembly, or the new seals will wear out quickly after installation.

2. Cylinder disassembly

  1. Place the oil drain pan underneath. Remove the hydraulic inlet and outlet hoses one by one. Immediately plug hose ports and cylinder oil ports to prevent oil spillage and contamination. Remove the upper and lower hinge pins and fixing bolts of the cylinder, and mark the installation orientation to avoid misalignment during reassembly.

  2. Lift the whole cylinder off and lay it steadily on rubber mats or wooden boards to prevent knocks and scratches on the piston rod and cylinder barrel. Clean surface grease and dust.

  3. Remove the cylinder end retaining nuts / end cap bolts and mark their positions. Tap the end cap gently with a rubber mallet to loosen it, then take out the guide sleeve and end cap assembly smoothly. Do not pry violently.

  4. Pull out the piston rod and piston assembly slowly and evenly. Keep movement vertical and steady to prevent the piston and piston rod from scraping the cylinder barrel inner wall. Place the removed assembly in a dust-free area for protection.

3. Old seal removal & cylinder inspection

  1. Remove all old seals: use a plastic pry bar to gently pick out piston main oil seals, rod seals, wiper seals, O-rings and wear rings. Aged stubborn seals can be slightly heated to soften before removal. Never use steel blades or pliers to pry hard, as they will scratch seal grooves.

  2. Thoroughly clean seal grooves: wipe grease, residual seal debris and adhesive residues from grooves with lint-free rags. Polish minor burrs and rust spots lightly with fine sandpaper to ensure smooth, undistorted grooves with no protrusions.

  3. Full component inspection:Check the cylinder barrel inner wall for scoring, scratches and corrosion; check the piston rod surface for plating peeling, dents and pitting; inspect piston and guide sleeve seal grooves for excessive wear, deformation or cracking. If cylinder bore scoring, piston rod damage or excessive groove wear exists, repair or replace parts first before installing new seals, otherwise leakage will recur rapidly.

4. Installation of new seals (Critical step)

  1. Preprocess new seals: Unpack and inspect new seals for damage, deformation or defects. Coat all seals evenly with clean hydraulic oil or dedicated hydraulic grease for smooth installation and avoid lip damage from dry fitting.

  2. Correct seal orientation (Very important):For U-type and Y-type main oil seals, the sealing lip faces the high-pressure oil chamber. (Piston seal lip points toward the cylinder bottom; rod seal lip faces the outer side of cylinder). The wiper seal lip faces outward to block dust. Install O-rings, back-up rings and wear rings in the original factory sequence. Do not reverse, omit or misinstall seals.

  3. Assemble seals step by step: Install piston components first: wear ring, back-up ring, main oil seal and O-ring. Press them into grooves slowly with special installation tools. Make sure seals are fully seated without twisting or folding. Then fit rod seals and wiper seals on the guide sleeve / end cap to ensure proper positioning.

  4. Reassemble parts: Slide the piston and piston rod assembly vertically and slowly into the cylinder barrel. Prevent seal edges from being cut by the cylinder mouth chamfer. Align the position marks and refit the guide sleeve and end cap. Tighten fixing nuts / bolts evenly in cross sequence to avoid end cap tilt and uneven seal loading.

5. Final assembly, test and commissioning

  1. Cylinder reinstallation: Mount the assembled cylinder back in place. Fit hinge pins and fixing bolts and tighten all connections. Reconnect hydraulic hoses and remove pipe plugs, ensuring tight, leak-free joints.

  2. Air bleeding and oil top-up: Start the truck at idle speed. Raise and lower the hopper multiple times slowly to bleed air inside the cylinder. Check hydraulic tank oil level and top up with clean hydraulic oil of the same grade if needed.

  3. No-load & loaded pressure test:Run 5–10 cycles of lifting and lowering under no load. Check for oil seepage at rod seals, end caps and hose connections, and confirm no jamming. Then perform half-load and full-load lifting tests. Hold pressure for 5–10 minutes. No pressure loss, oil leakage or hopper sinking means the installation passes inspection.

6. Prohibited operations & maintenance tips

  1. It is forbidden to disassemble the cylinder with residual pressure, forcibly disassemble seals or mix different seal types. These may cause seal failure and cylinder damage.

  2. For harsh mining working conditions, replace the whole set of seals instead of partial individual seals. New and old seals wear at different rates and may cause repeated oil leakage.

  3. Maintain dust-free conditions throughout assembly. Dust entering the cylinder will directly abrade new seals and shorten service life.

  4. Clean the work site after replacement. Check hydraulic oil cleanliness regularly. Replace turbid or contaminated oil promptly to extend cylinder seal service life.
