Howo Mining Truck Axle Oil Leakage Troubleshooting & Repair Guide

2026-10-09 23:21

Howo mining trucks work under heavy load and bumpy conditions in dusty and large temperature-variation mining sites. Axle oil leakage is a frequent fault, mostly occurring at oil seals, gaskets, breather holes, bolt joints, etc. Unrepaired oil leakage may lead to insufficient lubrication and wear/burnout of axle gears and bearings, resulting in severe safety failures such as axle breakage and wheel hub locking. Below is the step-by-step troubleshooting, repair and prevention solution, applicable to all series of Howo mining truck axles.

1. Emergency On-site Handling (Temporary measures, NO operation with faults)

  1. Shut down immediately once oil seepage or dripping is found. Do not operate under heavy load, drive at high speed or climb slopes with full load, to avoid aggravated leakage and dry grinding damage inside the axle.

  2. Clean and locate leakage point: Wipe off oil contamination and dust on axle housing, wheel hub, half shaft, differential end cover, oil drain/fill plug with rag or air gun. Confirm leakage severity: slight seepage, dripping or gushing oil.

  3. Emergency oil top-up: If leakage is severe, check gear oil level. Add heavy-duty gear oil of the same specification if low. Do NOT mix different oil grades.

  4. Simple tightening: Visually inspect loose bolts on end covers, axle housing joints and plugs. Tighten evenly with wrench and check whether leakage stops.

2. Root Cause Diagnosis (sorted by probability)

More than 90% of axle oil leaks on Howo mining trucks come from 4 categories:

  1. Blocked breather hole (most common & easily overlooked)Mine dust and sludge clog the axle breather valve / breather tube. During operation, gear oil heats up and expands, internal pressure cannot release, which will blow out oil seals and open gaskets. This is the key reason for repeated leakage even after replacing oil seals.

  2. Aging & damaged sealing componentsLong-term heavy load, vibration and high temperature harden, crack or deform half-shaft oil seal, wheel-side oil seal, differential oil seal, O-rings and gaskets.

  3. Assembly & spare part defectsCrooked oil seal installation, no retaining compound applied, wrong spare part model; overfilled gear oil causes overflow during operation.

  4. Mechanical damageCracked axle housing, casting porosity, worn grooved shaft journal, excessive bearing clearance, resulting in poor sealing contact and continuous leakage.

3. Targeted Professional Repair

(1) Breather hole blockage leakage (Check this first for recurring leaks)

  1. Locate breather valve and hose on top of axle housing. Remove and clean dust & sludge inside to unblock the passage.

  2. Inspect breather hose for bending, cracking or aging. Replace with genuine hose if damaged to guarantee smooth ventilation.

  3. Test run after cleaning. Normal pressure relief will resolve pressure-induced leakage.

(2) Oil seal leakage (Half shaft / wheel side / differential oil seal)

  1. Drain oil: Drain axle gear oil. Filter collected oil for reuse if clean; replace with new oil if contaminated.

  2. Disassembly: Remove half shaft, wheel-side end cover or differential assembly, take out failed old oil seal.

  3. Clean and polish: Fully remove oil, rust and burrs on seal housing and shaft contact surface to keep sealing surface flat and smooth.

  4. Standard assembly: Use genuine oil seal of matching specification. Apply Loctite 603 retaining compound evenly on outer ring of oil seal and seat. Press oil seal vertically and steadily to avoid tilt or looseness.

  5. Reassemble & refill oil: Restore all components, torque bolts, fill gear oil to manufacturer standard level. Do not overfill.

(3) Joint & plug sealing leakage

  1. End cover / axle housing joint leakage: Remove end cover, clear old sealant and gasket residue. Fit brand-new gasket, apply oil-resistant sealant evenly on joint, tighten bolts diagonally and uniformly to prevent deformation and leakage from uneven stress.

  2. Oil drain / fill plug leakage: Check thread and sealing washer of plug. Replace aged washer. Wrap oil-resistant PTFE tape for slightly worn threads; replace plug if threads are severely damaged.

(4) Axle housing & mechanical damage leakage

  1. Minor cracks on axle housing: Repair by professional welding, grind flat and seal. Pressure test and confirm no leakage before reuse.

  2. Porosity, large cracks or severe deformation of axle housing: Replace the whole axle housing. Do not reuse repaired housing under heavy load for safety.

  3. Grooved worn shaft journal or out-of-spec bearing clearance: Machine repair shaft journal; replace shaft journal and bearings if wear is serious, adjust bearing preload to eliminate leakage caused by excessive sealing gap.

4. Acceptance Standard after Repair

  1. Static test: Park vehicle and shut down for 2 hours. No oil seepage or dripping on all axle parts.

  2. Dynamic test: Run at low speed with no load for 10–15 minutes, then apply light load. No pressure overflow or leakage after axle warms up.

  3. Oil level check: Recheck gear oil level after test run, keep within standard range, no abnormal oil consumption.

5. Routine Preventive Maintenance (Avoid repeated leakage)

  1. Regular breather system inspection: Clean axle breather valve and hole every two weeks. Shorten to weekly in heavily dusty mine sites to prevent clogging.

  2. Standard oil selection & filling: Use OEM specified heavy-duty gear oil. Fully drain and replace oil during seasonal change or overhaul. Fill strictly to rated level, never overfill.

  3. Periodic sealing component inspection: Full inspection of oil seals, gaskets and plug seals every 3 months. Replace in advance for aging or slight seepage to prevent minor faults escalating.

  4. Standard operation: Avoid long-time overloading and violent bumpy driving to reduce deformation of axle housing and sealing structures, extend service life of seals.
